Dr. Kevin Oltmanns was the on-call physician for Dr. James Carley on Saturday, January 19. My 82 year old uncle, Virgil McIntyre, had fallen the previous week and broken his left humorous near the shoulder and we finally managed to get him transferred to Renaissance assisted living center of Stillwater on Friday evening, 1/18/2013. But we could not find his Trama-Dol prescription for pain. My aunt and uncle have problems with memory and may have misplaced the Trama-Dol they had been prescribed, or, it is entirely possible the medication was stolen by someone who had been in their home. He has some grandchildren we do not trust and he likely wouldn't have remembered if they had been in their home during the day. Nevertheless, we were left without any thing for his pain and were trying to reach someone after hours to prescribe something for pain over the weekend until we could get his orthopedic doctor to refill the prescription on Monday morning. The refill would never be in the hands of anyone except the staff at the Renaissance assisted living center because it would have been delivered by the pharmacy directly to them. The evening supervisor at Renaissance assisted living center called Dr Carley's after hours service and reached Dr. Oltmanns. Dr. Oltmann's was insulting to the Renaissance staff, telling the young lady that "accidents don't just happen" and "that was just too bad and he would have to wait until Monday morning." This is shockingly unprofessional behavior and constitutes a refusal to treat a patient. It was certainly within Dr. Oltmanns' prerogative to say that he was uncomfortable prescribing Trama-Dol or another controlled drug, but he could have at least prescribed Tylenol and Ibuprofen for the weekend. Renaissance cannot administer any medication to a patient without a doctor's order, and therefore could not treat my uncle's severe pain. Until the staff at Renaissance assisted living center and my uncle receive a formal apology from Dr. Kevin Oltmanns, this review will remain available for all to see.
